About freakout
Looking to challenge the traditional ways of winemaking on the Italian-Slovenian border, maverick Friuli winemakers began experimenting with new styles of winemaking, creating exciting white wine blends. When George Vare, one of Luna’s founders, and our winemakers tasted these exotic white wines, you could say they freaked out. Winemakers such as Gravner and Radikon have been our inspiration to experiment with this unique method, and we have had amazing success with the results.
What makes these wines so unconventional is that each varietal in the blend is fermented individually, in a method most suited to bringing out its best characteristics. They are blended two months before bottling, to unite their flavors and textures. Some of these white varietals have been fermented on the skins like red wines and punched down twice a day, to achieve optimum flavor and complexity. This is such an unusual practice that other winemakers often find that alone cause for freaking out.
